The figure edged up 0.03 percentage points from the previous quarter, with gross NPLs of 494.6 billion baht (about 14.06 billion U.S. dollars) registered in the July-September period, according to the Bank of Thailand (BOT).

The banking system’s loans shrank by 0.9 percent year on year in the third quarter of 2023, owing to the gradual repayment of business loans after the COVID-19 pandemic period, coupled with the banks’ portfolio management, said Atchana Lamsam, BOT senior director of the Financial Institution Model Inspection and Analysis Department.
Since household debt rose at the same rate as gross domestic product (GDP), the household debt-to-GDP ratio in the April-June period remained unchanged at 90.7 percent from the previous quarter, Atchana told a news conference.
However, the BOT will continue to monitor the debt serviceability of households with low income levels or slow income recovery, she added. ■
